Relaxation exercises for acute irritability

A short relaxation exercise creates distance between stimulus and reaction before the mood changes.

Irritability often feels like an internal impulse to react immediately. A short physical relaxation interrupts this automatism and gives you control over your behavior again.

First regulate, then react.

Before you answer or act, bring your body down in a targeted manner: tense your muscles, hold them briefly, release them. This change signals to the nervous system that there is no acute danger.

Why the body has to come down first

When you are irritable, your body is often faster than your mind. Breathing, muscle tension and heartbeat then determine the reaction.

Short relaxation techniques such as conscious breathing or progressive muscle relaxation reduce activation in the nervous system. This doesn't make you calm right away, but it does make you able to act again.

This is how you use a simple technique in an emergency

Choose a short exercise for acute moments, for example:

- Tense your hands and shoulders for 5 seconds, relax for 10 seconds - Consciously breathe deeply in and out three times - Raise your shoulders, hold them, let them fall

Then speak, write or decide.
