First drink, then snack

A glass of water before a snack creates a short break and helps distinguish between hunger and habit.

After quitting smoking, many people turn to snacks more often. There isn't always real hunger behind it. Often it is habit, boredom, stress or simply a short impulse.

Drink first, then decide.

A glass of water doesn't solve every craving. But it creates a moment of distance before you automatically reach for food.

Why this helps

Many snack impulses arise quickly and disappear just as quickly. If you eat right away, it often remains unclear whether your body really needed food.

Water creates a neutral intermediate step. This short break helps you to decide more consciously what you actually need at the moment: food, exercise, a break or simply some distraction.

This is how you use the water test

Before you grab an unplanned snack:

- Drink a glass of water - Wait five minutes - Ask yourself: Am I really hungry?

If the answer is yes, eat consciously and without haste. If not, you have successfully interrupted an automatic impulse.

Over time, you'll get better at recognizing when your body needs nourishment and when it's just a habit that needs attention.
