Chewing gum instead of cigarettes

Chewing gum can help keep your mouth and jaw busy if the craving is mostly habitual.

Not every craving for smoking is a strong craving for nicotine. Often the familiar movement is simply missing: something in the mouth, chewing something, doing something.

Sometimes the body is looking for something to do, not a cigarette.

Chewing gum can break this habit in the short term and stop you automatically reaching for a cigarette.

Why chewing can help

Many smoking rituals take place unconsciously. The mouth wants to be busy, the hands are looking for an action and the body expects a familiar process.

Chewing replaces part of this routine. It gives the mouth something to do and creates time until the strongest impulse subsides.

This can make all the difference, especially in typical smoking moments, such as after eating, in the car or while waiting.

This is how you use chewing gum consciously

Decide beforehand in which situations you would like to use chewing gum as support, for example:

- after eating - during a car ride - while waiting - in short moments of stress

Chew consciously for a few minutes and then check again how strong the craving is.

The more clearly you use chewing gum as a short-term support, the better it can help break old habits.
