After sitting for a long time, many people feel tired, tense or unable to concentrate. Often it's not energy that's missing, but movement. Arm circles are a simple way to reactivate the body and create new alertness.
Exercise is often the quickest answer to an energy low.
Why arm circles can wake you up
Sitting for long periods often leads to a slumped posture, shallower breathing and less movement. This can make fatigue even worse.
By doing arm circles you open your chest, relax your shoulders and neck and get your circulation going again. At the same time, you shift your attention from your head back to your body.
Especially after quitting smoking, this can help you not to automatically respond to tiredness with coffee or a cigarette.
This is how you use arm circles in everyday life
Link the exercise to situations that happen every day:
- after a meeting or phone call - before the coffee break - after long periods of sitting - during an energy low in the afternoon
Circle your arms forward for 30 seconds and backward for 30 seconds. Consciously sit up and breathe out deeply.
Just one to two minutes of exercise can be enough to become more awake and focused again.
